Leather Harness Saddle Sewing Machine United British Pearson #6 Sews Well

This offering is for a very heavy duty leather workers sewing machine most commonly employed in the saddle industry. It was made in the UK by the British United Co. These rarely come up for sale in the USA. I do not know the age of this machine but it is definitely over 60 yrs old. The machine is in great condition, It has no rust but does have the typical oil glaze on it from years of use.

It is driven either by it's hand wheel or treadle and works well either way. It would be considered a needle feed machine on steroids. It has it's original bobbin shuttle and bobbin as well as it's slide plates, and all appear to be in nice solid condition. The thread wax cup may not be original to this machine.

The bobbin winders for these machine's are a separate unit and one was never owned by the Italian shoe maker and saddle repair who owned and used this machine. He either wound the bobbin by hand or set up his own jig. His son does not remember which.

It takes Scmetz 331 class needles and these needles are 5 or 6 inches long. The clearance under the foot is about 1 1/4 and you can sew up to a full inch at least.

The stitch length is adjustable between 5-16 per inch. 331 is the needle system (needle size) LR denotes the needle point (LR, 45 degree spear point) Schmetz only make 331's with LR points, also you don't want to be using nylon thread is not suitable for the No6 or for leather, linen is the thread to use in the No 6 and the best available thread for leather. It was used until a year ago last February when the shop closed.
