Vintage Singer 15K Hand-Crank Sphinx Sewing Machine. This is good example of a Singer 15K. It has the very pretty Sphinx decals. The K just means it was manufactured at the Kilbowie plant in Scotland.

The most successful sewing machine design ever. It remained in production for over 100years. It has a class 15 bobbin case and hook system which has been the standard design used by almost all sewing machine makers ever since. The class 15 bobbin case also provides an adjustment to the lower thread tension. It loads vertically to the left-hand side of the machine, with access from below the slide plate.

A particularly notable feature of the model 15 was the location of the tension assembly. These were built into the faceplate above the presser bar, instead of at the front of the machine. Tension release is achieved by raising the presser bar. The is neither an early or late machine.

It does have a knob to adjust the stitch length but the dogs dont go backwards to back-tack. With a little experience you can achieve this quickly and manually so it is not really a problem - YouTube will show you how. The Singer 15K is a full-size machine.

It will sew most fabrics from fine delicates to denim or leather and will handle any normal household sewing task with ease. It has adjustable tension and stitch length controls. Hemming, quilting, ruffling, cording and many more stitches can be done with different foot attachments. Its a hand-crank but I can swap the hand-crank (at no cost) for a sew-tric motor with light, cable and pedal control. Alternatively, you could source these yourself. They are easy to fit. From my perspective, with this machine, the hand-crank is preferable and really does give you great fine control. If you would like, I can swap the case and cover for a treadle base and cover but this would cost extra.

It has been fully cleaned, serviced and oiled. It sews exceptionally well and runs perfectly. It comes complete with the bobbin case, two bobbins and a standard hemmer foot plus a new needle.

You can sew straight away. Cosmetically, the machine itself is in good condition. The same is true for the base and bentwood case. The decals are not perfect but it does have the beautiful embossed faceplates. If you want a beautiful machine in fine condition that sews well, get this one.

It will outlast us all! There are a few marks to the front and side edge of the japanned surface but these are hard to see.

The balance-wheel guard to which the bobbin-winder is attached has a little wear to the decals. There is also more substantial wear to the decals at the front of the machine bed these are just through use. For me, this does not detract from the beauty of this machine. There isnt a key with this one but a small flat-head screwdriver will easily open and close the case.

If you want a cosmetically perfect machine, with all the accessories, this isnt for you. A wonderful antique sewing machine, one that works really smoothly, one that will last longer than any of us. Of course, you can collect from me. I can also have it couriered to you with the machine well-protected in a tailor-made wooden case.
